Michael advises government and institutional organisations, businesses and private wealth clients on complex legal, strategic and governance matters. His expertise spans commercial business, sensitive policy and strategy, land and property, and the Crown’s relationship with Māori.

Known for his strategic thinking and pragmatic approach, Michael is often involved in matters where legal, commercial and relationship considerations intersect. His work includes sensitive and contentious land issues, complex commercial transactions, public works matters, and business and family wealth issues.

Michael has a particular interest in biculturalism, Māori–Crown relationships, governance and the role tikanga Māori can play in shaping contemporary legal and organisational thinking. He is interested in how different perspectives on leadership, stewardship, relationships and long-term decision-making can contribute to better outcomes for organisations, communities and future generations.

Michael is also a published author in this field. He contributed the chapter “Surplus Public Works Land: Power, Relationships, and Accountability” to Waking the Taniwha: Māori Governance in the 21st Century, examining issues of power, relationships and accountability in relation to surplus public works land.
