Thilini Karunaratne

Thilini advises individuals and families on contentious family and general litigation matters.  She provides clients with guidance in relation to complex considerations on issues surrounding children’s welfare, family disputes (both family court, private wealth (family-centric)), and (institutional) indigenous considerations. Thilini is also a Legal Aid Provider for family matters.

Fuelled by her passion for these areas of law, she approaches every case with empathy. Thilini understands the emotional toll that legal matters can have on individuals and families. She is dedicated to aiding clients in dealing with the intricacies of civil and family litigation.

Her legal experience includes working as a lawyer at Oranga Tamariki and a Judge’s Clerk for the Māori Land Court judiciary and Waitangi Tribunal members.

With a commitment to lifelong learning, Thilini graduated with a Bachelor of Law (First Class Hons) in 2018 and completed her Masters of Law (First Class Hons) in 2020.  She has a background in education having gained a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from the University of Auckland and a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood from RMIT University prior to becoming a lawyer.  Her passion for working with indigenous communities has her currently working towards completing her PhD with a focus on international indigenous children’s rights.
