Why Farm Succession Fails — Even on Profitable Farms: Andrew Clements on the Federated Farmers Podcast

When people talk about the strength of a farm business, the focus is usually financial.

Equity. Performance. Growth.

But according to Grayson Clements Director Andrew Clements, that’s only one part of the story.

On the Federated Farmers Podcast, Andrew joined host Ben Chapman-Smith to explore why some of the most financially successful farms still struggle to transition across generations and why the issue often has little to do with money.

Looking beyond financial capital

A key theme from the conversation is the idea that wealth isn’t just financial.

Drawing on James Hughes’ concept of the “five capitals”, Andrew explains that financial capital is only one component. The others — human, intellectual, social and spiritual — shape how families function, make decisions and stay aligned over time.

“Financial capital is the fuel,” he notes. “But the question is, what are you fuelling?”

Where succession starts to break down

Across his work with farming families, Andrew sees a consistent pattern.

“The pattern isn’t wealth dependent or profitability dependent,” he explains. “It’s a breakdown around communication… a lack of planning, and a lack of shared purpose.”

In many cases, the business itself is performing well. The challenge sits around it; in the relationships, expectations and conversations that haven’t happened.

The risk of leaving it too late

Farming families are often focused on the day-to-day demands of running a successful operation, but without clear communication about the future, the next generation is left to interpret what succession might look like.

Over time, those assumptions can diverge, and it’s often only when a transition is required that the gaps become visible.

Why this matters now

With farm values increasing and generational change becoming more immediate, the way families think about wealth is evolving.

The farms that transition well aren’t necessarily the most profitable.

They’re the ones that take a broader view and invest time not just in the business, but in the people, relationships and shared direction behind it.
